Over the years, I've spent countless hours growing, styling and developing bonsai here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Along the way, I've learnt that bonsai doesn't have to be as complicated as it sometimes seems.

I created the Shiro Bonsai Basics Online Course to share what I've learnt and help others enjoy bonsai without feeling overwhelmed by all the different species, techniques, soils and rules.

Whether you're just starting out or have been working with bonsai for a while, this course takes you through the basics and into some of the finer details and little tricks that can make a real difference.

Using real images of trees I've worked on and developed, I'll show you how different species grow, what they need and how to make better decisions as your trees change over time. Rather than simply following a set of rules about how a bonsai should look, I want you to understand your trees and learn to work with them.

What We'll Cover

We'll start with the foundations of bonsai, including different species, how they grow in nature, choosing suitable trees, and the tools and soils you'll need.

From there, we'll look at practical techniques such as pruning, watering, wiring and seasonal care, along with traditional bonsai styles and the process of developing and styling trees.

We'll also explore natural growth, character and structure, as well as bonsai displays, shohin, kusamono and accent plants.

The course includes over 17 pages of learning material, more than 2 hours of video lessons and downloadable care guides that you can refer back to as you work on your own trees.

My aim is to give you a better understanding of bonsai and the confidence to keep learning, experimenting and developing your own collection.

Your Certificate of Completion

Once you've completed the course, you'll receive a Shiro Bonsai Certificate of Completion to recognise the time and effort you've put into learning.

You'll also be part of the Shiro Bonsai community, where you can continue sharing your interest in bonsai and learning alongside others.
